The term Poker Face is defined as” A face lacking any interpretable expression, as that of an expert Poker player.” Maintaining your Poker face is one of the most important keys to success in a three card poker game. Not only must you avoid giving anything away to your opponents, but a good Poker player is also a skilled bluffer, and able to mislead opponents into making false assumptions.

Here are tips for maintaining your poker face:

It’s a full body effort. In order to maintain an effective Poker face, you must be aware of your whole body. Having a serious face shows that you know what you’re doing. But, if you have a nervous habit of tapping your foot, turning in your chair, adjusting your jewelry, tapping your Poker chips, biting your nails, or any other number of fidgety actions, this can also be an indicator to other players that you are nervous.

Watch your face in the mirror. People don’t realize how their facial expressions may appear to others, so this can make it rather challenging to keep a Poker face. So, stand in front of a mirror and think about different scenarios that cause various emotions, then watch your expression. Better yet, use a video camera to record yourself playing a practice game of three card poker with friends and observe your expressions carefully. This will help you control your facial muscles when they naturally want to react to various emotions during the game.

Your eyes are windows into your soul. Have you ever noticed that a person’s eyes “light up” when they’re happy? Their eyes also darken when they are angry, widen when they are frightened, and tear up when they’re sad. Even if your facial expressions are stoic, your eyes will naturally dilate when you are happy or excited. This is very hard, if not impossible, to control. If you have light eyes, this can be detected by your opponents. That’s why so many Poker players wear dark sunglasses. You should too.

Keep your hands on your cards. Don’t put your hands anywhere near your face during the game. Hand signals are often very subtle, but they can give away your Poker face without you realizing a thing. Hands on or near your face can send a thousand messages to experienced three card poker players, so try to keep them firmly on your cards.

Remain calm. Control your body movements, and try to act the same for every hand… unless of course you are intentionally trying to look nervous to fool your opponents.

Stick with your Poker face. Sometimes lack of expression or emotion can be very difficult. One way to develop an effective control of your facial expressions, without surrendering all expression, is to pick an emotion or expression at the beginning of the game and stick with it. For example, you may choose to be happy all evening, so you’re all smiles…regardless of your hand. Just keep thinking happy thoughts all night to help you stick with it. Or, you may decide to be sullen and glum for the evening. Think about sad songs or other things that will keep up this emotion, even if you have the winning hand.
